What are Inlays and Onlays?

When the damage to a tooth is too severe for a traditional filling but does not require a crown, inlays and onlays are methods of restoring tooth structure. Inlays and onlays are sometimes known as indirect fillings because unlike standard fillings that are created directly on the tooth; these restorations are made outside of the tooth and then bonded to the surface of the tooth. Inlays and onlays do not weaken the tooth structure like a regular filling but actually strengthen it.

How Do Inlays and Onlays Work?

An inlay is used when the damage is completely within the cusp tips or points of the tooth. When the damage is more extensive and involves more tooth surface including at least one of the tooth cusps, an onlay is used. After your inlay or onlay is bonded, your tooth will look natural and function just as it did previously.
